Emoni Bates’ first season at Eastern Michigan is in turmoil before it even began.
Bates, the former No. 1 high school prospect in the nation playing for Ypsi Prep and Lincoln High School in Michigan, was arrested Sunday night about two miles from the Eastern Michigan campus after sheriff’s deputies found a gun in the vehicle he was driving.
Bates was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and “altering ID marks” on a firearm. He was arraigned Monday, and his attorney, Steve Haney, said Bates would plead not guilty, according to an ESPN report.
Eastern Michigan suspended Bates from practices and games until his legal proceedings are resolved.
Ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2022 as a junior in 2021, Bates reclassified to the Class of 2021 and went to Memphis.
The 6-foot-9 small forward played one year for Penny Hardaway, averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in an injury-riddled season, before transferring to hometown Eastern Michigan over the summer.
